Dual Language Immersion Program

MVES Dual Language

Our school is proud to be the only school within Albemarle County that uses a Spanish Dual Language Immersion Program to deliver instruction. Details of how this program is delivered for your child’s grade level will be communicated directly by their teacher.

The faculty and staff at Mountain View began offer dual language Spanish immersion instruction across the entire school beginning in 2024-2025 after years of having both immersion and non-immersion tracks. This school-wide program now allows all students the ability to access the benefits of immersive instruction. Our focus is to promote biliteracy in both English and Spanish.

Research has repeatedly shown that this instructional model not only benefits students who are learning English, but also English Speakers. As noted by Murielle Hutchens (2025),

Neuroscience research shows that learning a second language increases brain density and strengthens executive functioning, directly supporting high cognitive function. Juggling two languages enhances the brain’s ability to prioritize information, switch tasks efficiently, and think flexibly. These build a critical foundation for success across academic and professional fields.

The cognitive benefits go beyond bilingualism. Students in dual language programs demonstrate stronger working memory, heightened attention control, and more sophisticated problem-solving skills. These mental tools enable them to adapt in real-time, whether they’re navigating a classroom project or responding to the demands of an evolving workforce.
